According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to one in five Americans comes down with the flu each year. Flu can be mild or severe, with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and body aches.

Here are 5 ways you can help your body fight the flu!

  1. Getting an annual flu shot in advance of flu season can go a long way toward protecting yourself and your family from getting the flu.
  2. Get some sleep. Resting your body is one of the best ways to rejuvenate your body and keep others from being sick. Put an extra pillow under your head to help drain your nasal passages.
  3. Drink fluids. Hot or cold, whatever soothes your throat or you can keep down if feeling nauseated.
  4. Take a steamy shower. Warm steam can help moisturize your nasal passages and clear out mucus in your nose and throat.
  5. Get in sync with zinc. Zinc is a natural fighter of the flu if used in early stages of the flu. Two zinc lozenges a day can help shorten the duration of the flu.
